ESSAY

  "Motivation in the teaching-learning process"

You may not know it, but motivation is of vital importance in education, as said by Alonso Tapia (1991:46) who states that: “wanting to learn and knowing are the basic personal conditions that allow the acquisition of new knowledge and the effective application of what has been learned when needed”.  According to what he says, there must be a disposition of both the student and the teacher; That is why motivation has a positive impact on the teaching-learning process since it helps the student's academic performance, the environment that the teacher generates in the classroom, and the psychological processes of both.

Motivation is an essential element in the academic performance. So, there are different elements to consider, first, intrinsic motivation since the attitude of the learner towards the study constitutes a significant aspect in their performance. In addition, the role of the student because he is the protagonist of his own learning process for that reason he must work in his concentration because is essential to understand and to do different assignments to get a good grade. Besides that, autonomy so that student can make decisions regarding the achievement of his activities. At the same time, responsibility since it has an important value for the student is aware of the consequences of everything he does or does not do, for example carrying out tasks with diligence, order and showing up to classes on time. In brief, school performance and motivation are closely related, which is why it is important to look for active means that allow great learning.

In addition, the environment in the classroom is fundamental in the teachinglearning process. For his part, Skinner considered that learning is due to the relationship of the individual with his environment and that learning is not determined by the child, but by the reinforcements and the atmosphere found in the classroom. For this reason, the role of the teacher is to carry out good management of the classroom. Furthermore, the instructor must innovate with new teaching strategies and adapt to different changes. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is necessary for the teacher to promote activities that allow students to be challenged to give them the opportunity to develop their potential. Therefore, it is important that the teacher has a reward-based system to promote student interest and participation. Without a doubt, the best learning environments create spaces where students feel confident and motivated by having the opportunity to put their skills into practice.

Consequently, motivation also helps in the psychological processes of both the teacher and the student. Firstly, it must be taken into account that humans are social beings, that is why language allows teachers and students to communicate effectively. Second, attention is a very important part because through it the teachers transmit their knowledge and the students acquire it, they cannot respond to several stimuli at the same time, so being attentive is vital to catch the ideas that the teacher wants to imply. On the other hand, emotions are reactions that they have and that allow them to guide their conduct and also respond to the demands presented by their environment, thus have three components: somatic are physiological changes, behavioral depends on the state of mind and education and sentimental refers to memories and lived experience. At last, we as teachers and students need motivation to develop the mental process to help us in order to achieve our goals.

In conclusion, we focus on three main elements: school result, the atmosphere and the psychological process taking into account that motivation is fundamental in the teaching-learning process, putting those things into practice the student and teacher find a great disposition to learn and to teach. From our point of view, we like teachers must be motivated, showing positivism and charisma to transmit them to students in order to help them in their academic grades and to influence the behavior of the learners. As teachers we must pay attention and do our work in a best way, interest and promote the desire to learn in the students. When we read and prepare the topic to be discussed in class, we share the knowledge, however, it is important to stimulate the students in their learning so that they feel accompanied and become better students.
